Natural Stone Masonry in Toronto
Natural stone is the oldest building material in Ontario masonry, and it is still the most durable. Toronto homes use it for front steps, porch landings, window sills and lintels, garden and retaining walls and, on many 1880s-1940s homes, foundations and decorative bases. Commercial buildings use it for entrances and storefront veneer.
Ontario Stone We Work With
| Stone | Character | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Credit Valley limestone | Warm buff to grey, very durable | Steps, landings, wall caps |
| Owen Sound ledgerock | Layered, natural split faces | Garden and retaining walls |
| Queenston limestone | Fine grain, takes crisp edges | Sills, lintels, trim |
| Indiana limestone | Uniform, carvable | Fine cut work, heritage trim |

Stone Steps and Porches
Front steps take more abuse than any other masonry on a house: foot traffic, salt, snow shovels and frost. Concrete steps on shallow footings crumble and sink. Stone steps built on frost-depth footings stay level. We use solid treads with thermal finish for grip and bullnose edges for comfort and looks, set on a dry-pack mortar bed for even support.
Garden and Retaining Walls
Dry-laid and mortared stone walls fail when water pressure builds behind them or the base was not prepared. We excavate, lay a compacted base, add clear stone drainage behind the wall and build with batter so the wall leans slightly into the slope.
The footing is the job
Most failed stone steps and walls we see had good stone and bad footings. We spend the time below grade so the stone above stays put.
Stone Veneer and Commercial Entrances
Full-bed stone and thin stone veneer give storefronts and lobbies a durable natural finish. We detail flashing, ties and movement joints so veneer stays bonded through Toronto winters. For heritage stone repair on older homes, see heritage masonry. For paving around new steps, see interlocking stonework.
Stonework is cut and set by the same Toronto masonry crews that handle our heritage brick, using Ontario limestone wherever it suits the job.
