Why Toronto Front Steps Fail
Front steps and porches are exposed to everything Toronto winter throws at them: snow, shovels, de-icing salt and freeze-thaw. Most failing porches we see share one problem: a landing slab sitting on a shallow base instead of a frost footing. Each winter, frost heave lifts it unevenly, and each spring it settles back a little differently.
Repair, Rebuild or Upgrade
| Condition | Best option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Surface scaling, sound footing | Resurface | The structure is fine, only the wearing surface has failed |
| Cracked or crumbling edges | Patch and resurface | Edges take the most salt and shovel damage, the core is still sound |
| Sinking, tilting, separated from house | Rebuild on frost footings | Without a frost footing, frost heave keeps moving the steps |
| Want a lasting upgrade | Natural stone steps | Dense limestone treads handle salt and freeze-thaw better than broom-finished concrete |

How We Rebuild
We break out the failed porch, dig to frost depth, pour footings, form and pour new steps in air-entrained concrete, slope the landing to shed water away from the house and reset each railing anchor solidly.
The stone upgrade
Many owners choose hand-cut Credit Valley limestone treads on new footings. They last for decades and suit older Toronto homes. See stone masonry.
For general slab repairs, see concrete repair.
