Pool Deck and Coping Damage After Toronto Winters
A pool deck sits through months of snow, meltwater and freeze-thaw with no one using it. In spring, owners find loose pool coping, cracked deck slabs and expansion joints that have split open. Water that got under the coping froze and lifted it. Water that got into the deck surface froze and caused deck spalling.
What We Repair
| Problem | Repair | Risk if left |
|---|---|---|
| Loose or rocking coping | Lift, clean, reset on mortar bed | Trip hazard and more water under the coping each winter |
| Cracked coping stones | Replace with matched stone or concrete | Sharp edges and pieces falling into the pool |
| Failed expansion joint | Cut out, backer rod, new mastic sealant | Deck pushes against the coping and lifts it |
| Spalled deck | Cut back and patch, or overlay | Rough surface spreads and becomes slippery and unsafe |
| Damaged bond beam | Structural concrete repair before coping | New coping fails again because its support is gone |

Upgrade while you are at it
If the deck surface is tired, an overlay like Jewelstone turns a repair into an upgrade: seamless, cool underfoot and slip-resistant.
For general slab repair, see concrete repair.
Pool deck repairs are scheduled by the same Toronto masonry office that runs our brick and stone crews, with a written quote 24 hours after the site visit.
