## What Is Tuckpointing?

Tuckpointing is a joint-finishing technique that makes brickwork look crisp and even. The joint is filled with mortar coloured to match the brick, then a thin, contrasting line of lime putty or fine mortar, the “tuck”, is applied down the centre of the joint. The result is sharp, straight lines that make irregular old brick look neat.

Many Toronto Victorian and Edwardian homes were finished this way, especially bay-and-gable fronts in Old Toronto and Cabbagetown and grander houses in Rosedale. Over a century of weather and patch repairs, those fine lines disappear. Tuckpointing brings them back.

## Tuckpointing vs Repointing

| | Repointing | Tuckpointing |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Purpose | Stop water entering failed joints | Restore the original look of fine joints |
| Joint finish | Flush or concave | Ribbon or bead line in contrasting colour |
| Typical walls | Any brick wall with failed mortar | Heritage fronts, feature elevations |
| Cost | Lower | Higher, more hand work |

Most walls need

repointing

[/repointing/ →](/repointing/)

first. Tuckpointing is the finish layer when you want the facade to look as it did when built.

## Lime Mortar for Heritage Brick

Toronto Victorian brick was laid in lime mortar in cream, buff, grey and pink tones. Lime is softer and more breathable than brick, so moisture leaves through the joint. In the 1970s and 80s many houses were repointed in hard grey Portland cement. That cement does not let moisture out and does not move with the brick, so the brick faces crack off instead. We see it every week.

For heritage walls we mix **lime putty** or **NHL 3.5** mortars, or ASTM C270 **Type O**, coloured with sand and pigment to match. For modern brick, Portland-based Type N is appropriate. The rule is simple: the joint must be softer than the brick.

> **Sample panel first, every time**
>
> Before we point a whole elevation, we mix samples on your wall and let them cure. You approve the colour in daylight, and we archive the recipe so future repairs match.

## How We Rake Joints Without Damaging Brick

Removing old mortar is where cheap jobs go wrong. Aggressive grinding chips brick edges and widens joints. We rake to a depth of about 2 to 2.5 times the joint width, using hand tools on soft brick and HEPA dust-extracted grinders only where safe. On heritage brick we cut hard cement out carefully so the arrises survive.

## Ribbon, Bead and Flush Joints

- **Ribbon joint:** a flat, raised band of contrasting putty along the joint. Classic on Toronto Victorian fronts.
- **Bead joint:** a rounded raised line, often on finer pressed brick.
- **Flush or concave:** standard finishes for repointing and modern walls.

We match the original profile where it survives and recommend one where it does not. For whole-facade projects, see

### What Moves the Price

| Cost driver | How it affects your quote |
| --- | --- |
| Wall area | Square footage of brick to be pointed is the base of the quote. A typical semi front is 300-500 sq ft. |
| Mortar type | Colour-matched lime mortar costs more to mix and cure than Portland-based mortar, and suits heritage brick. |
| Joint condition | Removing hard cement from soft brick is slow, careful work. Light raking of sound lime joints is faster. |
| Joint profile | Flush and concave joints are quicker than true ribbon or bead tuckpointing. |
| Height and heritage review | Scaffold, roof access and Heritage Preservation submissions add time. |

Every quote is written on letterhead within 24 hours of the site visit, fixed-price, with a 5-stage draw schedule. No change orders without your written approval.

Codes + Standards

## Which Codes and Standards Apply to Tuckpointing in Toronto?

Toronto masonry is regulated work. These are the rules we build to on every tuckpointing job, and why they matter to you.

### ASTM C270 Type N and O

Mortar types are selected to stay softer and more permeable than the brick. Type O or lime-rich mixes for heritage brick.

### Natural Hydraulic Lime (NHL 3.5)

Where a hydraulic set is needed, NHL 3.5 gives a breathable mortar that suits Victorian and Edwardian brick.

### Toronto Heritage Preservation

Mortar colour and joint profile on visible heritage elevations may need review. We submit analysis and sample photos.

### Noise By-law Chapter 591

Joint raking with grinders is scheduled inside City of Toronto construction noise hours.

## What Customers Say About Our Tuckpointing Work

> "Somebody had repointed our 1890s semi with grey Portland cement in the eighties and the brick faces were popping off. Marty explained why the hard mortar was destroying the soft brick, raked it all out with a dust extractor running the whole time, and tuckpointed in a buff lime mortar that matches the original joints next door. The sample panel sat on the wall for a week so we could see it in different light before they did the whole front. Clean site every evening, which our neighbours noticed too."

Michael and Anna P.Leslieville$9.5KLime Tuckpointing + Mortar Match

> "Our old pool deck was cracked and hot underfoot. The Jewelstone overlay is seamless, cool to walk on and the kids no longer slip. The 10-year warranty was in the contract, not just a promise on the phone."

Sophie T.Oakville$27KJewelstone Pool Deck

> "Bricks were spalling above our second-floor windows and pieces were landing on the walkway. Marty pulled the scaffold permit, replaced the damaged brick with reclaimed units that match the Annex red, and had a BCIN qualified review of the lintel before closing it up. Written quote, fixed price, no surprises."

Questions We Hear Every Week

## Tuckpointing FAQs

How much does tuckpointing cost in Toronto?

Tuckpointing in Toronto typically costs $2,000 to $15,000 per elevation or project. Price depends on wall area, lime versus Portland mortar, how much hard cement has to be removed, joint profile and height.

What is the difference between tuckpointing and repointing?

Repointing removes failed mortar and refills the joint to keep water out. Tuckpointing goes further: joints are filled with mortar matched to the brick and finished with a fine contrasting line that restores crisp brick geometry, the traditional finish on many Toronto heritage homes. See our repointing page for structural joint repair.

Why use lime mortar instead of cement?

Victorian and Edwardian brick is soft. Lime mortar is softer and more breathable than the brick, so moisture leaves through the joint and the joint, not the brick, takes the stress. Hard Portland cement on soft brick causes spalling.

How long does tuckpointing last?

Properly done lime or Portland pointing typically lasts 25 years or more, longer on sheltered elevations.

Is tuckpointing messy?

Raking joints creates dust, so we use HEPA dust extraction, dust sheeting and drop cloths, and clean the site every day.

Can you match the colour of my existing mortar?

Yes. We analyse the existing mortar, mix samples on your wall and get your approval before full pointing. The recipe is archived.

When is the best time for tuckpointing?

Lime mortar cures best from May to October, above about 5 C. Portland-based pointing has a wider window.

Do I need heritage approval for tuckpointing?

On designated or Heritage Conservation District properties, a change in mortar colour or profile can need Heritage Preservation review. Our expeditor handles it.

How long does a tuckpointing job take?

Usually 3 to 10 days per elevation, depending on size, height, hard cement removal and weather.

Can tuckpointing stop leaks?

It stops water entering through failed joints. If leaks come from flashing, cracked brick or a chimney crown, we fix those too.
