## What Is Repointing?

Repointing means removing deteriorated mortar from the joints of a brick or stone wall and replacing it with new mortar. It is the most important routine maintenance a masonry wall gets. When joints fail, water gets into the wall, freezes and starts breaking down both the mortar and the brick.

Mortar is meant to be **sacrificial**. It should be softer than the brick, wear out first and be renewed every few decades. Repointing renews that layer before the brick itself is damaged.

How much does repointing cost in Toronto?

Repointing typically costs $2,000 to $15,000 per elevation or project in Toronto, depending on wall area, height, the existing mortar and the mortar specified.

How do I know my wall needs repointing?

Look for mortar that is recessed more than a few millimetres, crumbles when scratched, has open gaps or has fallen out. Damp patches inside, efflorescence and spalling near joints are also signs.

What is sacrificial mortar?

Mortar is meant to be the sacrificial part of a wall. It should be softer than the brick so it wears first and can be replaced, protecting the brick. Repointing renews that sacrificial layer.

Is repointing the same as tuckpointing?

No. Repointing removes failed mortar and refills joints to keep water out. Tuckpointing adds a fine contrasting line to restore a decorative heritage finish.

How long does repointing last?

Done properly, 25 years or more.

Can you repoint in winter?

Portland-based repointing can be done in cooler weather with protection. Lime repointing is best from May to October.

Do you repoint chimneys?

Will repointing stop my basement leak?

Only if the water comes through above-grade joints. Basement leaks are more often foundation cracks or failed parging.
